WCG Wide Color Gamut is the most amazing feature on a TV which makes it look more real than others. A few years back when 4k TVs were launched and all the hype was towards them. All the salespersons and people who were purchasing the new 4k LED TV, used to compare them with the resolution like Full HD, HD Ready.
But as the technology changes and with modern technology now all the manufacturers talk and focus on the HDR (High Dynamic Range). HDR and WCG are the two things that we have heard and always come together. As we all know they found together but they are not directly connected to each other.
HDR is all about the Dynamic range but WCG is all about colors of TV. WCG is the reason for making the colors more colorful like Red becomes redder, Blue becomes bluer and all others. It allows us to see the different shades of one color.
What is Color Gamut?
Color Gamut is the full range of colors that are visible in the visual spectrum. This is also called the color space. The three primary colors Red, Green, and Blue RGB are the main colors, all the other colors are made by the combination of these colors or they can be created by making changes in these three colors.
When you go shopping for a new LED TV you must consider the colors of the TV as well. Most of the buyers are only limited to the size and price of the TV. But the experience of watching TV is incomplete without proper video quality.
Color gamut is created and developed by one agency named CIE. CIE stands for Commission Internationale de L’Eclairge (French name). This is the organization that is working on the standardization of colors.
WCG (Wide Color Gamut)
When 4k resolution launched it brings more pixels to the users, but what is more advanced than just bringing them more and more pixels in a TV is by improvising them and by making them more advanced. Here come the two names which help in improvising the pixels, WCG and HDR.
With the introduction of the WCG by the apple in their phone iPhone 8. They have launched the brighter and colorful colors. The colors which feel more alive by the naked eyes of humans on the screens. It brings the different shades and in-depth colors of a single color. It produces more lifelike colors.
That is why the combination of HDR and WCG is challenging the 4k LED TVs and UHD resolution TVs. WCG produces more colors in two steps:
1. It makes the color palette bigger. By making the color palette bigger this way, the primary colors which are reg green and blue become deeper and on the other hand the secondary colors magenta, cyan, and yellow are much richer.
2. Next, it also increases the depth of colors. By increasing the depth we mean the different shades of one color and the different shades between colors like the steps between the turquoise blue and royal blue. Where the normal HD TV can produce 16 million colors the WCG can produce and would display 1 billion colors.
Thus the HDR can produce the wider range in TV by light and WCG brings more depth and variety of different shades in a color.
Wide Color Gamut(WCG) is the next step toward the improvement of video quality in TVs. But it is not as big of a thing as better contrast ratios (via HDR, say) but it makes a great impact than 4k resolution.
Of course, you need to have a TV that is compatible with WCG and HDR, but also the content, without the content that is using WCG how a TV will be able to make more impact.
Other Main Points Regarding WCG-
- Not all 4K TVs can do wide color gamut.
- All current-generation OLED TVs (from LG and Sony) are capable of HDR and WCG.
- Most TVs of quantum dots are capable of WCG as well.
- There might be a difference in the production of TVs even if they both are WCG. This confusion could easily be solved by reading the reviews.
